At a distance of 95 kms. from the capital of Rajasthan, exists one of the world’s deepest stepped well – Chand Baori in a small village called Abhaneri.
The legend has it that a bunch of ghosts created this stepped well, overnight, for reasons unknown. The stepped well, though situated in a remote area, has figured in movies such as the Dark Knight Rises, Bhool Bhulaiyaa & The Fall.
3500 steps over 13 stores & 100 ft. depth in the ground and an unsettling air – that’s Chand Baori for you.
Adjoining to the Harshad Mata temple, the Baori exists inconspicuously. However, when you enter the premises, the air changes its smell and you can taste eerie in your mouth. If you listen closely, you can hear the bats squeaking.
The Baori is fenced now, but it was open and inviting at one point in time. You could step down the well. It’s believed that you never get to walk on the same step twice in the Baori. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself.
There are steps on three sides of the Baori & a pavilion & resting rooms on one side.
In olden days, the royalty would rest inside the pavilion, overlooking the stepped well. Now, when it’s deserted, the pavilion is home to bats and spirits unknown. The Baori is not used for water conservation anymore. Then, what is it used for now? One thing is for sure, Baori is of no use to the mortals any more.
So, does that mean – it’s being used by the dead now?

You may reach Abhaneri by road. Or you may take a train to Bandikui station, and drive from there to Abhaneri.
You have really researched the place well. You must write a travel book. I have read 1 recently and reading 2 more. Yours would also be fascinating.
