The long-preserved art of Pattachitra – painting on dried palm leaves: Raghurajpur in Odisha

Do you remember the first time you sat inside an aircraft? Or the first time you spotted a celebrity? Or the first time you received the message – ‘Salary Credited on XXXX’? I used to dream about all this as a kid, and experienced all three when I just entered 20s. It’s a feeling that…

Our Instagram Story:

Another one from the same evening, same resort, in Goa back then.
This is one of my favourite pictures from one of my early trips to Goa. This is probably a happy memory that keeps surfacing every time I think of vacations at this time of the year.
Whoever told you that you cannot buy happiness, did miss out on one thing - the ‘Happyness’ brand of chocolates with a packaging that puts a smile on your face.
So this happened in Pondicherry. I was there for a three day trip. Or four; I don’t remember because I wanted to get away as soon as I arrived. I was staying in this resort outside Pondicherry, near Auroville. And this picture was taken on the beach. I am facing the beach here, not because it was cool this way. But because I was super scared after what had happened 2 mins back.
Four months after the Nainital trip, I was in Goa. This picture is from the famous Baga Beach. The season had just started. So, the beach was clean and less crowded. I spent the whole day there, doing beach-like things. Staying under a shack, drinking beer & then some chai. And writing on the sand. Also, went for a walk, looking at people, noticing the newly weds, group of friends, gang of girls & beer-loving junta. I spent the next three days in Goa too. After this and several other trips to Goa, I realised that I love Goa for its roads, greenery and villages more. Localites are good too with their sound advice. Spotted a few deserted mansions and broken homes & remembered the articles about the haunted places in Goa. Who knew; I could have crossed paths with one.
The last day in Nainital began in a touristy way. I went to some recommended spots and it was super sunny. So, I took shade under a tree while waiting for my cab. This thela caught my attention with so many sugary treats. And look at the colors.
The first evening in Nainital looked like this. I was quite exhausted from the 12 hours of bus ride & another couple of hours spent in finding an accommodation. In the afternoon, I was wondering whether it was worth coming here or not given that half of Delhi NCR was hanging out in Nainital that weekend. After a few cups of chai & pakoras, I sat in the hotel lobby and looked around. It was breezy. As the evening grew darker, I became calmer. And then, I planned an itinerary for the next day over two more cups of chai.
Back in 2014, this was the first time that I chose the destination for a weekend trip. Before that, it was always a group of friends, someone else in the family who recommended places and I was fine with those. This was also an impromptu trip. Monday was a holiday, and on Thursday I decided to go to Nainital. Couldn’t book the train on such short notice. So, I travelled in a bus.
I am waiting for things to get better. I am waiting for better days when I would book cabs, visit cafes and have conversations with strangers.
