A sip of happiness: Kulhar Chai

They say that you can’t buy happiness. But you can buy a cup of tea. And that’s almost the same thing. Isn’t it? 🙂

The world is full of tea lovers who will do anything and everything provided you bring them a cup of tea. And tea love is the best love in this world.

Be it the hot cup of morning tea or steaming, sweet tea over snacks in the afternoon, nothing can beat the happiness and joy of sipping your tea in a slow fashion with loud, sipping sounds.

While everyone has their favorite version of tea, I have always liked  Kulhar (clay pot) Chai the best.

The Kulhar Experience:

A kulhar/ kulhad, is also called a shikora, in some places. It is a traditional terracotta cup indigenous to North India and parts of Pakistan. Kullhads don’t have handles, are unpainted & unglazed. Unlike ceramic cups, Kullhads are disposable & not to be reused. Since they are made by cooking in a fire, they are extremely sterile.

A kullhad chai is an out of the world experience. You got to hold it between both your hands & take a long sip. While you taste the tea, you are overwhelmed by the smell of earthen pot over caffeine. The light smell of cardamom, the rough texture of Kulhad, the dark, bright color of the tea & the sporadic taste of ginger – all of that makes an amazing tea sipping experience that china/ ceramic cups can’t even match to.

Beverage Tip: They also serve yogurt, kulfi, lassi, hot milk & rabdi in kullhads. You ought to taste each one of these.

You get the best Kullhad Chai at Rajasthan stall, Delhi Haat.

If man has no tea in him, he is incapable of understanding truth and beauty. – Japanese Proverb

Oh, wow! I am craving tea right now. I am so in phantom sphere of fragrances of tea in Kulhad. Aah! It is indeed orgasmic tea taste. Yes, i remember my first kulhad tea as a child in Khurja (U.P.) , i was fascinated by the crockery then. I ended up insisting my parents for buying Reusable Kulhads for home as other ones’ (disposable) were for free. That time i used to call it- earless cup because there were no handle. I am amused to recollect this memory . Thanks to your blog:-). Chai cheers~
