Majestic Thar: Sam, Sand & Sun in Jaisalmer

“No hurry, No worry, No chicken curry”, said our jeep driver who pulled off the Mountain Dew Desert Stunt for real. And man! does it feel scary, jumpy & happy?!

Glide your way through the sand; get an adrenaline rush even on a Monday, compete with your spouse/ partner in camel race, watch bright, neon, beautiful colors appear on the horizon only to get merged with the beige sand eventually – spend a day or two in Jaisalmer & revel in royalty.

The road leading to the Golden city…

We drove our way from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. It’s a good 5 hour drive with a phenomenal landscape change that can inspire a painter for a year full of paintings & can motivate a writer to pen down the lyrics of Oscar winning movies.

The best part about the route is – that you catch glimpses of Jaisalmer even before reaching the city. Skeleton trees with no leaves, masses of sand here & there, shrubs that appear the distant cousins of Cactus along the road & scenes that feel like someone has covered it all in earlybird instagram filter.

Take that route & captures some pictures to be treasured forever.

Everything that glitters is Sand.

Within an hour of checking in the hotel in the month of April, we started for Sam Sand dunes. We covered a few kilometers & suddenly it felt that we are in a foreign land with no passport, no visa & cops are chasing us. Yes, a few bikers on Pulsar are going to follow you & coax you to buy their package of art & cultural program in the sand dunes. We conveniently avoided them & raced our Ritz to the place where everything that glitters is gold (well, gold alike).

Ride, Race & Revel.

Don’t think of money even once & do both – camel rides & jeep safari. They are worth every penny, probably more. Of course, you should be good at negotiating before everything. Me? Oh! I am a baniya. Negotiation & Calculation runs in my blood. 😀

When you are finally in the Thar, there is nothing but sand all around. Camels merge with the sand & the only thing that stands out is the stroke of colors – Colorful beads around the suave camel neck, colorful attires of ladies singing & dancing, colorful bands in the sky before, during & after the sunset. You might not know but there exists a romantic in you. And that romantic manifests in the Thar. You feel you are part of a poem. It’s a story & it all goes to infinity just like the sand of Sam Sand dunes.

Ride that camel, no matter how funny you look. Ride with your spouse/ partner/ that special friend. It won’t bring you close, but will create a memory for a lifetime. Laugh your guts out in the Jeep Safari. Strike a conversation with your driver. Ours cracked jokes every now and then & donned the hat that belonged to my husband. Click pictures even if you are not photogenic. Watch the cultural program. Watch the sun set & experience how beige transitions to colors & then to nothing but dark.

Advice: Tip everyone generously even though I endorse strong negotiations.

Word of caution: Be careful while clicking pics. The jeeps just appear like pimples – out of nowhere. They race & it’s not easy to control or apply brakes at that speed.

Selfie tip: Wear something colorful. Carry your shades. Get a cap/ hat/ stole if you can. It will add character to the pictures.
